January 2017 Updates
Dear Parent / Carer,
I hope that you all enjoyed a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. I thought at this time of the year it would be useful to update you / remind you of some of the things that are going on at Kirk Hallam, many of these were covered in our ‘Parents’ Information Evening’ held in September 2016 however that seems like a long time ago.
In the lead up until Christmas we supported three Charities – Children in Need, Ilkeston Arena Food Bank and Save the Children. Well over £2000 was raised for Children in Need & Save the Children; closer to home our Minibus was fully loaded with donations for the local Food Bank in Ilkeston run by Arena Church. Thank you to all for your generosity.
If you wish to contact any member of staff, rather than trying to guess their email address we now have firstname.lastname@example.org. If you send an email to this address then our commitment to you is that you will get a response within 48 Hours. At Kirk Hallam, we receive around 18000 emails a day, of which 5000 are external.
Anti-Bullying is something very close to my heart, anyone can report it either in person to any trusted adult or by using our TextSomeone system. Messages come immediately and directly to me and are acted on promptly.
This year we have a Head Boy (Ryan Cumiskey) and Head Girl (Sally White). They have been instrumental in improving the facilities we offer our Sixth Formers. Since they were appointed we have vastly improved the Sixth Form common room with the opening of a fully equipped student kitchen, new laptops and a complete re-furnishing of the area.
Historically Kirk Hallam has held its Sixth Form Open Evening early in the Autumn term. Feedback from our students tells us that they feel this is too early in Year 11 to be making these important life changing decisions, and I have to agree. For September 2017 Admissions we will be holding an open evening on Tuesday 7th February 2017 at 6pm so that students have had a full term working towards their GCSEs and will have completed their Mock Examinations. I think this will allow students from Kirk Hallam and other schools to make far better informed choices about their futures. We will be expanding the number of courses we offer in our purpose built Sixth Form building ‘Lakeside’.
Earlier in the year we launched ClassCharts (www.classcharts.com) with parents and carers and posted out login details to everyone. To date 650 parents and carers have logged onto the system which allows you to access your child’s positive and negative records ‘live’. We currently run at 92% positives to 8% negatives across the whole Academy. If you have lost your login details then please email email@example.com and we will re-issue them. We are currently looking to allow students to also access the system.
To help you keep up to date with all that is happening at Kirk Hallam we now have an APP that contains key information, the Academy calendar, news items and important messages. Just search ‘Kirk Hallam’ in iTunes or Google Play to download – it’s free.
Multi Agency Team (MAT) at Kirk Hallam
Over the last year I have been in detailed negotiations with Derbyshire County Council over the future of our MAT at Kirk Hallam. All local authorities are facing very difficult budget decisions and we have agreed to financially support the MAT at Kirk Hallam which will allow them to stay based here on site. This is an invaluable team of professionals that support families facing a wide range of difficulties.
I hope that you find these updates useful, if you have any questions or anything you would like to discuss then please do get in touch. My Headteacher sessions take place between 3-5 each Thursday – please email me at Headteacher@kirkhallam.derbsyhire.sch.uk or call and ask for Miss Snaith. If Thursdays do not work for you, we will happily arrange another time. I would also remind all parents / carers of my open invite to come and look around during the day – again please get in touch should you wish to.
With best wishes,
Mr M.D.Ebbage, Headteacher
