Kirk Hallam Community Academy became an academy on 1st March 2011. Kirk Hallam is a popular and highly oversubscribed 11- 18 high performing Academy situated in the Erewash area of Derbyshire. Its students are drawn from both rural and urban areas. The Academy admits students into Year 7 from 15 local Primary Schools.
We believe that our Vision and Values Statement encapsulates who we are and what we are trying to achieve.
‘Kirk Hallam is an inclusive and open learning community characterised by the highest standards of achievement, opportunity and aspiration for all.
We are committed to providing a supportive, happy and safe environment for students at the Academy which is at the heart of our community.
This high achieving and unique Academy provides creative and challenging learning opportunities.
Our students, staff, governors and community are dedicated to working together to inspire individuals to develop the skills, confidence and initiative to play active and positive roles in their future.’
We are committed to the raising of standards through the improvement of teaching and learning, to providing opportunities and support for the personal and professional development of all of our staff and to developing management and leadership skills in all staff.
Visitors frequently comment on the quiet and purposeful atmosphere that pervades the Academy. This is a result of high quality teaching and a very effective pastoral system that supports both individual students and parents.
The Academy is also the Hub school for the Erewash School Sports Partnership, which consists of 47 schools and colleges. The SSP has increased participation in high quality P.E. from 68% to 85%, achieved over 600 individual sporting qualifications, paid for £65,000 of playground markings and brought in a further £147,000 of funding for community projects, created a Young Leaders Academy of 80 students and provided coaching from 18 different professional development courses.
The Academy has invested considerable time and resources in providing high quality ICT and ICT support, (networked computers, WiFi and digital projector in every classroom) as we strongly believe that the use of the new emerging technologies will allow us to continue to personalise learning and improve the quality of teaching.
Crucial to every child’s development is the wide range of enrichment opportunities that permeate the Academy. These range from foreign residential visits (France, Germany and Japan) to involvement in our outdoor education programme including a visit to Lea Green Outdoor Education Centre, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Science visits to Shipley Park and the Space Centre, industrial visits in the D&T curriculum, theatre performances including the Brief Candle Theatre Company who regularly perform at the Academy as part of the PSHEE programme and Academy music and drama productions. Other extra – curricular opportunities include the Carnegie Book Award shadowing group, Toyota Challenge team, lunchtime clubs for Gardening, Science, Creative writing and a wide range of sporting clubs. We are committed to offering a wide range of experiences for our students, which includes the development of our on-site farm in 2016 to offer BTEC Animal Care in KS4 in partnership with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
The Academy is also a core member of the Erewash Partnership working with all the Erewash Secondary Schools and also the George Spencer Teaching School Alliance.
